Education
Since 1994, Trees For Houston has been presenting educational programs to Houston area elementary schools designed to demonstrate the benefits of preservation and the basic physiology of our urban trees. The educational program encourages lasting urban forestry awareness by creating a more informed community through education and heightened awareness of the importance of trees in an urban environment, and the need to protect existing trees and plant new trees. The Trees for Schools project benefits all cultures and special needs populations because of its introduction through schools in all areas of the city. |
The presentations covered basic tree biology, tree benefits, the different types of trees in our area and a little about TFH. Each of the students also received a Growing Together Kit, supplied by the National Tree Trust, which they can later plant in their community.
Last year 576 trees were planted at 22 school campuses. Providing more than shadier sidewalks and playgrounds, the Trees for Schools project fosters a sense of pride and cooperation in the students and the surrounding community.
