Trees For Houston celebrated a major milestone at its 2026 Root Ball: A Million More, honoring the planting of its one-millionth tree and looking ahead to the next million. The milestone was officially commemorated on February 5 with the planting of a ceremonial 15-foot live oak at the historic Kellum-Noble House in Sam Houston Park.
Founded in 1983, Trees For Houston has spent more than four decades planting, sourcing, distributing, and caring for trees across the region. Reaching one million trees reflects the dedication of volunteers, donors, and partners who share the vision of a healthier, greener Houston.
Now in its 32nd year, Root Ball remains a cornerstone fundraiser for the organization’s mission. This year’s event welcomed more than 425 supporters and raised $590,000 to advance Trees For Houston’s work. Led by event chairs Melissa and Barton Kelly and Emily and Ben Gonsoulin, the evening celebrated both a remarkable milestone and the momentum for the next million.
